Govt Set to Cancel Registration of Medical and Dental Colleges

The sub-committee of the Senate Standing Committee on Health has directed the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) to cancel the registration of medical colleges that fail to refund fees.

The meeting was chaired by Senator Palwasha Khan and attended by the Special Secretary of Health, the President, and the Registrar of PMDC.

During the session, officials revealed that two Afghan students had been admitted to Sargodha University under the foreign quota. The students reported that the university was not issuing their degrees, leaving them in distress.

The Special Secretary of Health stated that colleges cannot increase fees at the time of admission. The PMDC President emphasized that strict action would be taken against colleges that fail to refund fees.

The PMDC spokesperson noted that complainants often fear retaliation, which prevents them from coming forward. The spokesperson encouraged students to file any complaints against medical colleges directly with PMDC.

Meanwhile, the Private Medical Association argued that PMDC has no authority to fix fees. However, the committee directed PMDC to take strict action and cancel the registration of colleges not refunding fees.

The committee chairperson urged PMDC to fully utilize its authority and suggested that if amendments to the act are needed, the committee would recommend them. The committee also requested detailed updates from PMDC within two weeks regarding the fee refunds.

The PMDC President reiterated that any college failing to refund fees would face consequences.
