Quranic studies as a compulsory subject for matric and intermediate

The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) has decided to make Quranic Studies mandatory for intermediate and matriculation. This decision was taken in compliance with instructions from the Peshawar High Court (PHC).

The subject will also be added to the list of existing subjects in the 2023 annual Matriculation and Intermediate examinations, increasing the total number of marks from 1,100 to 1,225.

Students from the province’s religious minorities will take an additional ethics-based course in place of Quranic Studies. Instead of the existing four necessary subjects, there will now be five after this addition.

The Boards of Education have also requested advice from the Directorate of Education regarding the 75-mark paper that will be included in the 2023 annual exams.

The higher education department has been pushed to put this decision into action by the provincial education department, which has also made recommendations for the subject’s instruction in colleges.

Quranic Studies are already covered in classes at KP for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The PHC was asked to declare the subject mandatory and hold a formal examination on it. The court just decided to make the subject mandatory in response to the appeal.
