The Punjab government has extended school closures for another week due to worsening smog, triggering a health emergency in Lahore and Multan.
During a press conference, Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb announced a complete lockdown in both cities for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Construction activities are banned until the following Sunday to reduce pollution.
Schools will remain closed, while colleges and universities will conduct online classes. Restaurants must close by 4 PM, but takeaway services can operate until 8 PM.
The minister described smog as a serious health crisis. Leaves for hospital staff have been canceled, and health desks are now operational. Residents are advised to stay indoors and wear masks if going out.
Aurangzeb highlighted immediate steps to combat smog, including demolishing non-compliant brick kilns and implementing a 10-year anti-smog policy. Despite these efforts, she stressed that addressing smog requires long-term action.
Interdepartmental teams are actively working to manage the crisis. The government aims to protect public health with short-term emergency measures and long-term strategies.
