Punjab Government Considers Urgent Action on School Closures Due to Rising Smog Levels
As smog levels continue to surge, the government is considering the closure of all middle and high schools, both public and private, across Lahore, reported 24NewsHD TV Channel on Monday.
According to the report, Lahore has held the title of the world’s most polluted city for three consecutive weeks. Due to dangerously high pollution, primary schools have already been closed.
To help reduce emissions, the Punjab government has restricted heavy vehicles from entering Lahore on Fridays and Sundays. Winds carrying smoke from crop burning in India have worsened Lahore’s air quality, exacerbating the already severe smog conditions.
On Monday morning, Lahore’s air quality reached hazardous levels, with an overall AQI of 414. Specific areas reported alarming AQI levels, including DHA Phase 8 at 714, Syed Maratib Ali Road at 569, the US Consulate at 424, and Askari 10 at 404.
In response, the Punjab government has implemented a “green lockdown” in parts of Lahore to combat rising pollution. Certain areas are now classified as hazardous due to the heavy smog blanketing the city each morning.
Further measures include restricted hours for construction activities, barbeques, and rickshaw operations to limit emissions contributing to the smog.
Meanwhile, Multan is also facing an environmental crisis, with its AQI reaching a hazardous level of 657, positioning it as one of the most polluted cities. Local authorities, however, have remained largely inactive.
In Narowal, farmers are continuing the illegal burning of crop stubble, which has led to a rise in respiratory and skin illnesses among residents. Authorities there have stated they will respond to reports and have issued a warning to farmers to cease this activity or face strict penalties.
Concerned citizens are urging the Chief Minister of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, along with the Narowal district administration, to take decisive action against violators.
