Teachers Protest Against Reduction In Pension and other benefits
Hundreds of government employees, including school and college teachers, protested in front of the Punjab Civil Secretariat on Thursday, condemning the provincial government’s decision to reduce pension, gratuity, and leave encashment benefits.
The demonstration, organized by the All Government Employees Grand Alliance Punjab (AGEGA), was led by Ch Mukhtar Gujjar, Chairman of AGEGA Lahore Division. Addressing the protesters, Khalid Javed Singhera, Chairman of AGEGA Punjab, Ziaullah Niazi, and others accused the government of economically devastating millions of teachers and employees in Punjab through these notifications.
They criticized the government for increasing its benefits ninefold while slashing employee benefits by 50%. Highlighting the critical role of teachers and employees in Punjab’s development, the speakers condemned the economic exploitation and warned that such measures would leave retirees destitute.
The protesters demanded an immediate withdrawal of the notifications, threatening province-wide sit-ins on highways if their demands were unmet. The demonstration caused significant traffic disruption on the Lower Mall, The Mall, and surrounding roads.
