FDE Revises School and College Weekly Holiday Policy
The Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) has announced that all educational institutions under its jurisdiction in Islamabad will now observe Saturday as a working day. Only Sunday will be observed as a holiday in Islamabad.
This decision, effective from November 30, 2024, to February 1, 2025, aims to compensate for academic losses caused by recent closures of schools and colleges in the federal capital.
The notification, issued on November 29, 2024, highlighted that the closures were primarily due to frequent disruptions, including political protests. Notably, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protests this month prompted authorities to shut down educational institutions for several days, citing safety concerns.
These interruptions have resulted in significant loss of classroom time, prompting the FDE to adopt a six-day workweek schedule temporarily. All schools and colleges, both urban and rural, operating under the FDE, are required to implement this schedule within the previously notified official timings.
The directive, issued with the approval of the Director General of the FDE, emphasizes the importance of recovering lost instructional hours to ensure students meet their academic targets for the year.
The decision comes amidst criticism from parents and educational stakeholders, who have expressed concerns over the impact of prolonged political unrest on students’ learning. The additional working day is expected to help mitigate these setbacks while ensuring academic continuity.
