LHC Chief Justice Enforces Strict Order on Male Staff in Girls Schools and Colleges

After a string of harassment incidents at girls’ educational institutions, Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice Aalia Neelum issued a strict directive, stating that “no male staff will be tolerated where females are present.”

Expressing dissatisfaction with the Punjab Police’s handling of these cases, Chief Justice Neelum criticized the failure to prevent the spread of a viral video related to one of the incidents.

During the hearing, the Chief Justice condemned the inefficiency of the police, asserting that “anything can be done if there is a will.” Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. Usman Anwar admitted to mishandling a recent suicide case at Punjab University, acknowledging that the required report under Section 174 of the CrPC had not been filed.

Additionally, the court dismissed a report from Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) as inadequate, noting it was only prepared after notice was served. The Chief Justice ordered the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to probe social media accounts linked to incidents at Punjab Group of Colleges, LCWU, and the Punjab University case.

Chief Justice Neelum also stressed that students’ statements should be recorded in the presence of their parents and university officials to ensure transparency.

In response to multiple petitions calling for a high-level inquiry into harassment at educational institutions, she established a larger bench to examine the matter and investigate the circulation of a fake video allegedly involving Provincial Information Minister Azma Bukhari.
