Punjab Plans Transformation of Commerce Colleges into IT Hubs
The Punjab government has announced that all government commerce colleges in the province will be closed and transformed into information technology (IT) colleges.
The Punjab Department of Higher Education has started implementing this initiative, which aims to modernize the province’s educational system and better align it with current job market demands.
The plan involves revamping all 85 government commerce colleges in Punjab, transforming them into IT institutions. The decision was taken due to fewer students enrolling in commerce courses.
According to the Higher Education Department’s report each commerce college now has fewer than 100 students. The sources further revealed that the government spends up to Rs. 300,000 per commerce student.
This high cost has led to the decision to convert these colleges into IT institutes to cut expenses and better match educational programs with current job market needs.
The transformation will involve hiring experts and adding new facilities to the IT colleges. These upgrades will include co-working spaces for young IT entrepreneurs and e-libraries to boost research and learning.
The project is expected to start within the next 10 days, with efforts to complete the conversion swiftly. Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat emphasized that this change aims to enhance Punjab’s position in the global IT industry.
