LAHORE: The Punjab government has shared an update on school closures amid the worsening smog situation in Lahore and parts of the region.

Authorities in Punjab’s capital Lahore are considering different options to curb smog, including changing school timings and stern measures against vehicle emissions amid worsening air quality in the city.

Provincial capital Lahore tops the list of most polluted cities as school-going students complain of shortness of breath and respiratory problems.

Amid wider concerns, Punjab’s education minister Sikandar Hayat signaled the possible closure of schools as the air quality index crossed alarming levels. Addressing the crisis, Hayat said the government had temporarily adjusted school hours, and said schools could be closed if children’s health deteriorates in the coming days.

He also urged the parents, students, and the public to join efforts to tackle the smog problem. As Lahore is gripped by severe air pollution, the community is being called upon to take action alongside the government’s efforts.
